This month we are learning about Earth and Space Science. We will be focusing primarily on earth materials including rocks, soil, plants, and water. Below is a schedule of what I hope to cover and do each week.
Week of March 4-8
-Gather evidence of and uses for rocks, soil, plants and water.
-Explain where we see these elements.
-Explain how we use these elements
-Explain why these elements are important.
-Go on a photo scavenger hunt for specific rocks, plants, soil, and water sources.
-Put mystery seeds in wet paper towel in ziplock bag, hang in window.
-Each day draw or explain any changes observed.
Week of March 11-15
-Soil investigations.
-Discover differences in weight between 1 tablespoon of sand, clay, and potting soil.
-Examine samples of soil from around the United States.
-Complete a workbook illustrating and describing the differences in the various soils.
Week of March 18-22
-Water investigations.
-Participate in several lab stations investigating the properties of water.
-How many drops of water fit on the head side of a penny? The tail side of a penny?
-Sink or float station.
-How long to melt using hands vs hair dryer, sand, salt, and room temperature.
-Make a beaker thermometer.
-Work in small groups to decide how we can conserve water at home, at school, and in general.
-How can we protect and conserve our natural water sources?
-How much water do you use at home worksheet...predictions and results.
Week of March 25-29
-Re-examine the seeds we started and try to identify what plants they are.
-Try to find evidence of these plants on school grounds.
-Compare qualities of rocks.
-Complete bar graphs separating rocks by these qualities: color, texture, and weight.
-Learn parts of a plant.
-Learn the functions of each part.
